Shepley Springtime Headlines

This issue of Shepformation will be hitting your mailbox around the time we usually hold our annual Contractor Trade Show.  As you know, we are taking a year off from the trade show due to the large-scale facility renovation of the Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis (formerly the Sheraton at the West End rotary).  We made this decision knowing that a project of the scale they are proposing cannot afford them to give us (and you) the attention our trade show deserves.  Please stay tuned for next year, when we will be enjoying the newly remodeled facilities.  Meanwhile, there are plenty of headlines to get excited about this year.

Green Building!  We have always been green (just take a look at our trucks, or the thousands of sweatshirts adorning industry pros on and off Cape), and we are quickly increasing our awareness and stock of materials that are "green" as well.  Shepley just became the first lumberyard in Southeastern Massachusetts to receive FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody Certification.  This means we can help you with your LEED certification projects.

Shepley is turning 30 this summer!  July 14th is our 30th anniversary, and, just like any 30 year old, we will be stretching the celebration out as long as possible.

The 7th Edition of the Massachusetts Building Code.  Liz Kovach, our Estimating Department Manager, has continued to meet with a task force of builders, engineers, and code enforcement officials to work out the many kinks of the new code.  Code classes will be scheduled for the Upper-, Mid-, and Lower-Cape to help all of us in the industry learn and interpret the new regulations.  These classes are the result of a lot of hard work by this task force, and we appreciate their time and efforts. We'll keep you posted on the schedule.

Shepley's Estimating Department.  We are excited to announce the expansion of Shepley's Estimating Department.  Joining Liz Kovach and Stefan Richman are Dave Kenney and Adam Marsh.  We have confidence in Dave and Adam's abilities to help us keep our service level high.

Shepley's Marvin and Andersen Staff Establish Themselves as the Industry "Go To" People for Impact Zone Doors and Windows.  From helping spec the proper products to training installation crews on the job, the staff of both of our showrooms have distinguished themselves as the leaders in helping people understand the new Code requirements.

Optimism Trumps Pessimism.  I've noticed that a number of our customers are busy and optimistic about business opportunities they are seeing, despite the constant barrage of bad economic news. Remember, all these markets are state of mind driven. I wrote a few months ago that we "attract what we act."  Doom and gloom always breeds more doom and gloom, while optimism and positive action breed success. I have a sign on my wall that says, "It's not about how you feel, but how you choose to act on how you feel."  Right now, negativity is abundant.  Unfortunately, it won't pay the bills or get us to where we want to be.  What kind of image are you broadcasting for yourself and for your company? Whatever it is will probably lead to more of the same. When people ask us why we are successful and optimistic even in tough times, we can answer that we all have a choice in what happens to us. It's up to us to do the choosing.

Lumber Update, Jim Baker
Going Green By Taking The Green Out!

The treated lumber industry is experiencing two major changes this year. The first is a change from soluble copper treatments to micronized copper treatments. MicroPro™ technology features copper ground into very small particles (micronized) that go into the wood without being dissolved. The major benefits are: the copper stays in the wood better; and the treatment is less corrosive because the solvent is taken out.

The second change is a move to lower retentions. Because less of the treatment leaches out, less treatment is needed. One noticeable difference is the color-wood treated this way looks almost natural and not the dark green we have been accustomed to. Shepley will be changing to MicroPro™ beginning this May.

There are a number of benefits:

First Wood Preservative to Receive EPP Status

The Osmose MicroPro Technology is the first wood preservative to be EPP (Environmentally Preferable Product) certified by SCS (Scientific Certification Systems).

Reduced Energy Use

The Osmose MicroPro preservative system reduces total energy use by approximately 80% and greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

No Environmental Impacts from Copper

The copper in wood products treated with the Osmose MicroPro preservative system bonds readily to organic matter in the soil. Result: the copper becomes biologically inactive, thus causing no eco-toxic or other environmental impacts.

Largely Eliminates Copper Releases

Wood products treated with the Osmose MicroPro preservative system result in the release of 90-99% less copper into aquatics and terrestrial environments when compared to standard treated wood products.

Ask your sales team for more information on MicroPro or visit the following website www.osmose.com.

Trademark Deck & Railing Installation Techniques

The Trademark Rail system is a low maintenance system made from PVC and wood flour and contains no toxic materials. Each Trademark rail system is sold as a kit containing: handrail; bottom rail; balusters; and stainless steel brackets which are powder coated for maximum protection. Post sleeves, skirts and caps are sold separate and are designed to slide over 4x4 posts.

The Trademark rail system has a 20 year Limited warranty and will not rot, crack, peel, blister or suffer structural damage. The product must be finished and maintained in accordance with all manufacturers' guidelines.

Helpful Installation Tips:

Trademark Post Sleeve Installation

The post sleeves are designed to slide over a 4"x4" post, in some cases the 4x4 post will need to be shaved to allow the post sleeve room to slide freely over the post. Please do not force the post sleeve over the post as you will damage the sleeve. The damage may not show up at the time of installation but, will later on after the installation has been completed and moisture has swollen the wood 4x4 post.

Trademark Rails

Measure between the post top and bottom to obtain the rail length. Before cutting the rails to length, subtract 1/16" off the measurement. This will allow the rails to slide between the post. Also, make sure the predrilled holes on the top rail retainer and bottom rail align before cutting to length. Balusters will not line up if this is not done correctly.

Trademark Retainer and Bottom Rail Bracket Installation

When placing the "U" shaped end of the painted stainless steel bracket on the underside of the top rail retainer and bottom rail, you need to make sure the bracket is located 1/16" inside the cut end. Otherwise, this will cause the rail to be too tight within the opening and possibly cause damage to the post sleeve.

Trademark Rail and Baluster Assembly

Align the ends of each baluster into the top rail retainer and fasten it using 1 ¾" stainless steel screws. Do not over tighten because you will cause damage to the baluster and lose holding power. Align the bottom rail and fasten it using stainless steel screws 3" through predrilled holes. Do not over tighten.

If there are any questions regarding installation, please call Shepley Service at 508-862-6219 or visit www.Trademarkrailing.com.

Product of the Month, Ron Winner

Windstorm Wall Sheathing

We are happy to announce that we are now stocking Windstorm OSB and will soon have 4X10 CDX in stock. Windstorm is an OSB product that we stock in 7/16 X 4 X 121 1/8, 124 ¾ and 145 1/8.

We have brought in these products to help meet the requirements for the new 7th Edition MA Building Code.

Windstorm is applied in a vertical fashion and, along with special nailing patterns, will help achieve the required continuous load path. It will also help alleviate some of the hardware needed when using conventional horizontal plywood.

In regard to the new 7th Edition MA Building Code, we are working in conjunction with the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod to learn more about the new code. Seminars for builders, architects and designers will be forth coming. We'll keep you posted when events have been scheduled.

Ron Winner has been on the road selling for Shepley for almost 20 years. He covers the Chatham, Yarmouth and Barnstable territories. Ron's inside team members are: Louise DiCecca, Mat Hersey, Naomi Kelsall and Christina Thrasher. You can reach Ron and his team at 508-862-6240.
Boise Versa-Stud, Joe Madera

The 7th Edition of the MA State Building Code is considerably more stringent in terms of stiffness requirements for walls. Boise Cascade Versa-Stud Doug Fir LVL studs in 2x4 and 2x6 are a practical way of adding strength to any wall condition.  Versa-Stud wall framing offers 182% more bending strength and 112% more stiffness than number 2 SPF 2x6 studs - perfect for wind resistance, strength and appearance in any tall wall application. And the straightness makes them perfect for kitchen and bathroom walls, where cabinetry is to be installed.

We have spent many years searching for the highest quality LVL stud that meets the requirements of our builders, and believe we have found it in the Boise Versa-Stud.

For questions regarding engineered wood products, contact Joe Madera at 508-862-6217.

Team Shepley Raises Over $12,000 For March of Dimes!

On Sunday, February 10, 2008, Team Shepley took the number one fund raising spot with $12,444 at the March of Dimes Tele-A-Rama in Hyannis. Congratulations goes to the Cape Cod Mason's who were hot on the tail of Team Shepley, raising $9900!

Team Shepley members Poncho Thompson (Captain), Karen Allbecker, Kayla & Tom Dennison, Mike Farman, Katrina Finton, Mat Hersey, Brian Keyes, Erin Killeen, Danielle & Sharon Parkka, Chuck Sturtevant, Christina Thrasher and MC Tony Shepley thank all of our friends and family that generously donated to this wonderful cause!

This year touched us personally, as a friend of Shepley gave birth to a premature baby.  The baby has been gaining strength and weight at Boston Children's Hospital for almost four months, and is expected to join his family at home any week now. Because of the generosity of donors to the March of Dimes and progress in the medical field, this child will have all the chances of a baby that goes through full gestation.

Thank you, again, to everyone that helped make this years March of Dimes Tele-A-Rama a huge success!
