TONY'S TERRA FIRMA, by Tony Shepley
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING
We have used the phrase Attitude is Everything for years. It is on our sweatshirts, hats, t-shirts, but most of all it's on our minds. We think it is what helps define us as a company and as individuals.

Attitude, of course, is a matter of choice, not luck. It is what pushes us to overcome obstacles that others cannot.

One of our drivers, John Didsbury, gave me the passage below the other day. It's not the first time I have seen it, but every time I encounter this gem, I want to share it because it is so on target. Please live it and pass it on.

Attitude

By Charles Swindoll

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes."

Charles Rozell "Chuck" Swindoll (born October 18, 1934) is an evangelical Christian pastor, author, educator, and radio preacher. He is also the founder of Insight for Living, which airs a radio program of the same name on more than 2,000 stations around the world in 15 languages.

LUMBER UPDATE, by Jim Baker

In January I mentioned some of the problems regarding the supply of Western Red Cedar and how that was affecting prices and the availability of red cedar boards and shingles. The situation has not improved, in fact, it has gotten worse. So, I though it important to mention again.

The supply of quality red cedar fiber, which has been in decline for some time, is especially tight for a couple of reasons. First, hemlock is mixed with red cedar in many of the available strands and must be logged at the same time as the cedar. Currently, there is little demand for hemlock. Since the loggers can't just leave the hemlock and take the cedar, the cedar cannot be harvested. Second, late logging starts caused by poor weather conditions and spring melt make what wood is available difficult to get to the mills. Some mills are running at reduced capacity while others have shut down altogether.

Prices have risen steadily over the last several months and it looks as though that trend will continue through the summer. The cost of red cedar shingles is almost 50% higher than a year ago. And availability, especially on some of the specialty shingle items, is sketchy at times. CVG boards and bevel are also pricey and have broken inventories of some items. We will keep you informed of changes in the market and provide you updates on alternative products.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH - RUBBER ROOFING
By Andy Senatore & Gordon Correia
We are extremely excited to announce the addition of E.P.D.M. (Ethylene, Propylene, Diene, Monomer) Rubber Roofing to our roofing product line at Shepley.  E.P.D.M., commonly referred to simply as "Rubber Roofing", is ideal in low-pitch roofing situations.  International Diamond Systems is the brand of rubber we will be stocking.  International is manufactured by Firestone, one of two rubber manufacturers that private label their products to many companies.  They offer warranties, applicator programs, samples and literature.

Shepley offers rubber in 5 different size rolls:

  • 10' X 25' .060
  • 10' X 50' .060
  • 15' X 50' .060
  • 20' X 50' .060
  • 10' X 100' .060

We are stocking all the glues, adhesives, primers, cleaners, and installation accessories (fasteners and installation plates in quantities of 100/box or 1,000/box) needed for rubber application.  We also stock pressure sensitive (peel and stick) flashing and cover strip, seam tape, uncured rubber flashings, and aluminum edge metal flashings in white and mill finish.

Roof insulation will be Polyiso Foam Board Insulation available in ˝" 4 X 8, 1" 4 X 8, and 2" 4 X 8 recover board. We have also brought in tapered Polyiso roof insulation in 4 X 4 pieces. Each piece is tapered one way, using a 1/8" slope. (ex.: ˝" - 1" pc., 1" - 1 ˝" pc., 1 ˝" - 2" pc.). This product allows you to control the direction of water on the roof surface.  Rubber roofs shouldn't hold water for more than 24 hours.

We are proud to be leading the way by providing value, diversity, and flexibility in our existing product line.  We want to be your one-stop shopping destination for all your roofing needs: asphalt shingles, cedar shingles, and rubber roofing.  Please ask us your questions; we'll get you the right answers!  We have the ability to offer technical expertise on everything we sell, and rubber roofing is no exception.  We offer formal and informal seminars highlighting both product and application techniques.  We can meet you at your jobsite, home or office.  Please ask your sales team for information on these products and demonstration seminars.

Andy Senatore and Gordon Correia are Shepley's Roofing Vertical Product Specialists. They have over 50 years of combined industry experience. Both Andy and Gordon are available to answer any questions you may have. Give them a call, stop by, or ask them to come to your jobsite.

You can reach Andy and Gordon by calling 508-862-6200 and asking for the Shepley Roofing Experts!

HAMMER'S SERVICE CORNER, by Mark Hambly
SPRING CLEANING
Winter weather and spring nor'easters tend to leave residue and stubborn debris on our windows and doors. The following are a few suggestions on removing these materials from the glass. *

Please note that you should not clean glass while it is exposed to direct sunlight. This spring cleaning project is perfect for an overcast day. It is always recommended that you follow directions carefully and heed all product warnings.

For stubborn residue and contaminates, you can use soap and mineral spirits:

1. Apply mild soap, mild detergent, Leptyne® solvent (PPG Industries, Inc.), mineral spirits or naphtha solvents to glass either by spraying or using a clean, grit-free cloth or sponge coated with cleaning solution. CAUTION: When using solvents, do not use too much, as damage to the glazing or insulating unit seals can occur. After cleaning the glass with solvents or mineral spirits, immediately clean the frame with soap and water to prevent staining. Follow solvent manufacturer's directions on label for toxicity, handling and flammability warnings.

2. Wipe cleaning solutions on the glass in a circular motion, applying light to moderate pressure. Approximately three to five passes of the affected area may be required to remove the residue.

3. Rinse the glass surface immediately with generous amounts of clean water, removing the cleaning solution from the glass surface.

4. Using a squeegee or clean, lint-free dry cloth, remove water from the glass surface.

5. If glass residue is still evident, repeat steps 1 through 4.

For immovable debris (glue, pitch, etc.), contaminates and scratches, you can clean with toothpaste.  Apply toothpaste to damp cloth and buff in a circular motion until clean.

For harsher contaminants and scratches you can use a polishing compound. There are compounds on the market, such as cerium oxide, that work well for reducing fine scratches and scuff marks. Any glass supplier will have polishing compounds available for purchase.

If you have any questions regarding window and door service, installation or maintenance. Please contact the Shepley Service Department at 508-862-6219. We'll be happy to walk you through a solution over the phone, or come to your jobsite.
