30 Years Young!
Last week, we celebrated Shepley's 30th anniversary in business. On July 14, 1978, we became a Massachusetts corporation and first opened our doors for business at our current Hyannis location. To put things in perspective, it's interesting to note some other things that were happening at the same time our company began.

In 1978:

  • Sony introduced the first Walkman, the first portable stereo and big clunky grandfather to the iPod and other miniature MP3 players we enjoy today.
  • Hotel California, by the Eagles, was the record of the year.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed out 1978 at 805 points (compared to 11,500 today).
  • A gallon of gas cost an average of 63 cents.
  • Atlantic City New Jersey was first granted gambling permits.
  • Ultra sound technology first came into use.
  • The Wall Street Journal Prime interest rate was 11.75%.
  • The US dollar plunged to record lows against European currencies.
  • The three top TV shows were Laverne and Shirley, Three's Company, and Mork and Mindy.

I have been touched by the number of our customers and suppliers who have called and written to recognize us hitting this milestone. When you look at the changes above that have taken place in the last 30 years, it gives us a clue as to the enormity of changes we should expect in the next 30 years.

I really enjoy the 30th anniversary picture (above). It shows the team of people here who have gotten us this far and who are poised to take us down the road through the next 30 years. When I look at the faces in the photo, I see Attitude is Everything ! written all over.

Thank you for your business and for helping us turn a dream into a company.. Bring on the next 30 - we're ready!
Lumber Update, Jim Baker
The lumber market continues its slow but steady climb out of the basement- due more from lack of supply than increased demand. Summer mill shutdowns have been extended in many cases, which has caused mill inventories to be on the thin side. We expect this trend to continue into fall although it's very difficult to predict. As you might imagine, rising energy costs are plaguing every segment of the industry, from raw materials to transportation. As mentioned last month, all asphalt roofing manufacturers (hurting from the record oil prices) have announced a series of price increases through the summer. Roofing availability is also tight, so it's very important to be careful when quoting and to make every attempt to plan ahead.

FSC Update
We have added a small amount of FSC spruce framing to inventory: studs and lineal 2x4 and 2x6. Requests for certified lumber continue to increase and we've had great success sourcing various items. One very interesting FSC product we've sold is a 5/4x6 decking product-Mayan Mahogany from Guatemala. Mayan Mahogany looks very similar in appearance to Ipe, but is less dense and easier to work with.  Using this product will help obtain points for both the LEED for Homes and the NAHB Green Building programs.

Please call with any certified lumber questions or requests.

Certainteed Flintlastic SA Roofing System
Rolled roofing has certainly come a long way since the days of double coverage cap sheet available in only two colors, black and white.  Today, we have amazing new options such as CertainTeed's Flintastic SA product line.

Flintastic SA roofing membrane is a premium, self-adhering SBS modified bitumen roll roofing material.  The beauty of this product is its ease of installation.  The old days of adhesive brushes, solvent cleaners, and ruined boots are long gone.

CertainTeed's Flintastic SA line of products is more than a single membrane, it is a complete roofing suitable for most low slope applications. In addition to the roll roofing the Flintlastic system offers two base products; NailBase and  PlyBase. CertainTeed recommends the use of  NailBase in conjunction with all self-adhered membrane roof installations on nailable substrates. The NailBase helps preserve the integrity of the substrate, adds additional waterproofing performance capability and also enhances fire resistance, enabling UL Listing of the roof system. The PlyBase is designed for direct attachment to non-nailable substrates without fasteners.

Not only is the "peel and stick" installation a snap, CertainTeed's Flintastic SA is available is the same nine colors as their standard roofing line of shingles so you can enjoy the ease of "peel and stick" installation on low slope roofs while being able to color-match the rest of the job.

Flintastic SA roofing membranes are manufactured on state of the art, dedicated roofing lines specifically designed for the production of modified bitumen membrane.

Your sales team can provide more information about this exciting and versatile product line and our resident roofing experts, Andy and Gordon, are available to provide job-specific information and on-site recommendations, cost-effective suggestions, and estimating.

We wish you a great summer and "happy roofing"!
