| We Attract What We Act
"There's no hope for a successful past." That's what our friend and customer John Falacci (H.I.S.) says, and it's true. Have you ever tried to drive in reverse using only your rear view mirror? Hopefully not at any speed or for very far. Basing your life or your business only on what you don't want is a abit like driving backwards. Why not use all your faculties?
Try a simple exercise. Answer these two questions: What is your favorite food? What is your least favorite? What was your favorite book? Least favorite? I bet it's easier for you to think of your least favorites. That's because negative impressions stick more easily and require no responsibility or maintenance. It's more work to pick something you DO want than it is to decide what you don't. You're more vulnerable to criticism when you stand FOR something.
Imagine how much more effective we would be as parents, managers, spouses, etc., if we stopped focusing on what we don't want and started focusing on what we do want. Most of our opinion is really based on past experience, and is reactive. "I didn't like it when 'X' happened the last time I did 'Y'. I'm not going to do 'Y' again. How about if we try telling people what we think things should look like - how about if we tell people what we want to see? Give them something to aim at - something tangible to achieve. It's direct, it's positive, it's clear. However, also takes practice.
We are constantly fed more negative information than positive, so it takes work to turn the tide. The media saturates our minds with news of scandal, financial doom and gloom, murder, and the like. Maybe this news reminds us that we're better off than the guy in the headlines, but what does it do to our direction? What does it do to our future?
I believe that to a large extent, we are what we think and we become what we feel. We attract what we act! So, here's another exercise -try not thinking negative thoughts for one day. Try to turn around anything or anyone you encounter and make them positive. Try to say only positive things and think and speak of what you would like to see, not what you'd rather not see. I guarantee it's hard, but it's a wonderful first step.
Here's a thought to ponder when things aren't going your way - if we don't take control of life, we can be sure that life begins to take control of us. After all, Attitude is Everything!

| Product of the Month - Latitudes Decking & Railing Systems |
|
| By Brian Keyes
Deck season is in full swing and since we here at Shepley have been getting such great feedback on our recently introduced line of Latitudes Decking and Railing, we wanted to take this opportunity to again highlight all that this outstanding product has to offer.
With Latitudes, your customers will enjoy the look and feel of natural wood without the maintenance. Latitudes Decking and Railing is manufactured using the Strandex® process. This advanced technology produces the strongest and most reliable extruded solid composite product available in the marketplace today.
The entire Latitudes line provides superior water resistance and protection against UV degradation and is available in four popular colors (gray, redwood, cedar, or walnut). Latitudes decking also offers a reversible finish (wood grain or brushed) and is available in lengths of 12', 16', and 20'. We are currently stocking all lengths in gray and redwood. Cedar and walnut are also available. Please check with your sales team.
Latitudes also offers the unique and exciting Equator hidden fastener system. By eliminating the need for end blocks and pre-drilling, Latitudes Equator slotted decking saves you both time and money. Installation is quick and easy. Equator fasteners even automatically space each board! Latitudes Equator provides your customers with a "barefoot friendly" deck and a clean, aesthetically pleasing look. For those who prefer a more traditional design, solid decking is also available.
Latitudes offers a wide variety of railings, balusters, post caps, and decorative fascia which allows you to create a customized look. Latitudes Natural Railing is the perfect complement to Latitudes Decking and can be cut, dried, and worked like lumber. It is available in the same classic colors as Latitudes Decking. Ornamental balusters are available in several colors including bronze, black, white, and stainless. Latitudes distinctive post cap options include Tiffany-style designs and a new black solar cap design powered by rechargeable AA batteries.
Whatever you choose, Shepley sales personnel are here to help you make all your deck projects successful and profitable!
Latitudes enjoys widespread contractor acceptance and is gaining greater name recognition in the marketplace. You may have heard the recent radio advertising campaign featuring Latitudes' spokesperson, hockey star legend, Bobby Orr. Keep your eyes out for the upcoming "hands-on" Latitudes construction opportunities presented at Shepley by Boston Cedar. This event will be held during one of our regular Friday cookouts. Please consult a member of your sales team for more information. Who knows, maybe Bobby Orr will stop by?

| Lumber Update |
|
By Jim Baker
The strength in lumber and plywood prices has carried over from last month, and it looks as though prices will continue to rise at least through July. This rally seems to be based more on product availability than actual demand for a myriad of reasons. Canadian lumber and plywood mills have been hurt by the narrowing of the exchange rate, as well as (in some cases) historically low prices. There are quota issues as well as raw material problems, and many mills have curtailed production. It isn't often when the market is driven primarily by lack of available lumber with flat demand, but that is the current situation.
The saga of red cedar continues as river flooding and striking workers have made a horrible supply situation worse. Prices will continue to rise with continued poor availability. We are seeing some spot shortages in other products such as treated lumber (trucking mostly) and roof shingles, so please plan ahead whenever possible.
