Color It Green!
Besides my favorite color, and one that I am kidded about being more than obviously fond of, Green is an emerging movement.  It is an approach to our world and how we fit into it; and a force that will grow with incredible speed and influence in the near future.

Many people get a bit frustrated with the concept of green because of its cliché-like quality or because there is so much information about green (both fact and fantasy) that it can be overwhelming to try to sort the real from the "greenwash". We understand. Everything is a bit confusing in the beginning, and it takes a while to sort things out and get your bearings. Remember -- it wasn't that long ago that we yelled at our computers and cursed Bill Gates -- but we've gotten past that now, haven't we?

The key to understanding green is to take it one step at a time.  Nido Qubein (motivational speaker and president of High Point University) is quoted as saying, "One of the greatest reasons people cannot mobilize themselves is that they try to accomplish great things. Most worthwhile achievements are the result of many little things done in a single direction."  This applies here.

Let's take one product and measure its Green ratings.

We have sold an exterior trim product called Bodyguard® for the last three years. In the New England market, in the same applications, it routinely competes with common pine, western red cedar, redwood, fir, and PVC trimboards.

Bodyguard is a plantation grown, radiata pine, that is pressure treated with an EPA approved LOSP (Light Organic Solvent Preservative) treatment that gives Bodyguard a 30-year warranty against rot and insect damage. It is then coated to our specification with an alkyd prime coat and an alkyd topcoat on all six surfaces of each board. If factory installation and finishing guidelines are followed, we then offer a 5-year warranty against paint failure. Finally, if any manufacturing issues or failure due to rot or insects occur, we not only replace the material, we will also offer reimbursement of $3.50/lf to rip and replace and $2/lf to repaint.

Let's rate the product evaluation point by point on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the best green rating):

  • Bodyguard is plantation grown under FSC standards.  (5)
  • It is pressure treated with an environmentally sensitive process, and will outlast other wood trim materials. Bodyguard has been in production for some 35 years and is a proven product.  (5)

  • It uses new generation, furniture grade, finger jointing to efficiently use wood fiber, create the lengths that are desirable, and yield very straight high quality boards. Less waste = more green.  (5)

  • Bodyguard's alkyd primer and topcoat are the best foundation we know for subsequent topcoats of either alkyd or 100% acrylic latex field coats. Factory priming and painting is efficient, controllable, and monitorable by the DEP. Waste is controlled better. Recycling is standard practice. Workers operate in a much better environment with regard to VOC exposure than on job sites. Alkyd paints have higher VOCs than latex, but, having painted millions of feet of wood, we know that alkyd yields the best foundation for other paint coats.  (3.5)

  • Transportation - to get the combination of quality, finish, and product we wanted in Bodyguard, we had to look beyond the United States. Bodyguard comes from New Zealand and, while it is shipped by container (an efficient form of transportation), it has to travel a long way.  (2)

Averaging the score above gives Bodyguard a 4.1 "Shepley Green Score".

Recently, the sales teams at Shepley received Certified Green Professional designation from the LBM Journal.  I invite you to learn more about our green product selection and this new building movement, and I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Lumber Update, Jim Baker
Lumber production seems to be in sync with the lower level of demand we are experiencing, and prices have continued to rise accordingly. Inventories are very thin, especially in the east, so I would expect prices to continue to be on the strong side well into the fall. Limited production has allowed plywood and OSB manufacturers to raise their prices as well.

Asphalt roofing prices continue to soar with more increases announced for the fall. Please be very careful when quoting future jobs, as there does not seem to be an end in sight. Availability is also tight. Fortunately we have a vast inventory with over 3,000 square in stock. We are also adding IKO Cambridge 50 year to inventory in 3 colors; Dual Black, Harvard Slate, and Charcoal Gray.

Green Update: IKO has announced that their Cambridge 30 shingle has been independently certified by the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) for recycled content. The 40% pre-consumer recycled waste rock in the Cambridge 30 means using this shingle will contribute toward both LEED and NAHB credits for using recycled building materials.

A reminder to those seeking LEED certification-Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) building materials only contribute toward LEED credits if the products are supplied by vendors that hold FSC Chain of Custody certification, which Shepley Wood Products does. Please call with any green building questions.

ZIP System Roof and Wall Sheathing by Huber Engineered Products

ZIP System® roof and wall sheathing products have a built-in water-resistive barrier so you never have to use a housewrap or felt again! All you have to do is install the panels and tape the seams with the ZIP System™ tape, and you're done.

The ZIP System includes: roof panels with Precipitek moisture barrier; wall panels with Stormex water-resistive barrier; fastening and tape guides; and system tape. And the ZIP System has improved traction for a safer working environment.

What makes the ZIP System roof sheathing revolutionary? The roofing panels quickly cut off water from entering your project and withstand the elements for up to 90 days. And the integrated water barrier provides moisture resistance if shingles are damaged or blown off in a storm. Because of the panel strength and stiffness, the need for H-clips is eliminated. And the panels are made with the same resins used in AdvanTech® flooring, providing a flat under roof covering for a consistent roofline. The roof panels are now self-spacing, eliminating the need for 1/8" gaps between panels.

What makes the ZIP System wall sheathing superior? The built-in Stormex water-resistive barrier keeps bulk water out during and after construction and eliminates the risk of water becoming trapped between housewrap and sheathing. The wall panels are specially engineered for breathability to allow moisture vapor to travel through the panel, allowing walls to breathe and dry out. The Type 1 air barrier reduces air infiltration and helps to maintain the R-value of insulations, promoting energy efficiency. The ZIP System tape can help reduce air leads as recommended by Energy Star®.

I recommend the ZIP System roof and wall sheathing for all of your projects. They install 40% faster than traditional housewraps or felt and your job sites will have a cleaner appearance! And all of Huber's products are SFI Certified, qualifying for points under the NAHB Green Certification Checklist.

Shepley carries the wall system in 4x8x7/16 sheets and the roof system in 4x8x½ and 4x8x5/8 sheets. And the ZIP System panels are backed by an exclusive, limited 30-year warranty.
